Clifford C. Graber (seated) was born in 1873 in Clay City, Indiana. His father ran a brickyard, and after leaving school in the eighth grade, Clifford went to work in the family business. Like many Ontario pioneers, Graber came to California seeking a healthy climate due to a chronic lung illness. He arrived in 1892, soon after this photograph was taken. He and his brother Charles invested in prime Ontario ranch land and began growing citrus.

While waiting for the citrus trees to produce, Clifford Graber started harvesting olives from an abandoned grove a few blocks east of the Fourth Street ranch. His partnership with his brother eventually dissolved, but Clifford continued to harvest olives with his new wife and partner, Georgia Belle Noe, whom he married in 1906 at her parents’ home. In the early years, the couple lived on H Street.
